The Minnesota Twins signed closer Glen Perkins to a new 4-year, $22.175 million contract extension on Friday in a deal that will keep the star reliever in a Twins uniform through 2017 and possibly longer.
Perkins will receive annual salaries of $4.025 million in 2014, $4.65 million in 2015, $6.3 million in 2016, and $6.5 million in 2017 in the new deal and the Twins also have a $6.5 million option for 2018 with a $700.000 buyout.
Perkins. a 31-year-old left-hander, has a 28-17 career record with a 3.89 ERA and 54 saves in eight major league seasons and went 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA and 36 saves last season when he was named to the American League All-Star team for the first time.
This is a solid move by the Twins as they continue their rebuilding process.
